Understanding MaineCare for assisted living in Maine

MaineCare — Maine's Medicaid program — may cover some or all costs of residential care for eligible individuals. Coverage is primarily provided through the Home and Community Based Waiver (Section 18) for assisted living settings, and the Private Non-Medical Institution (PNMI) program for residential care facilities.

Not all facilities accept MaineCare. Acceptance varies by facility and by current enrollment capacity. Some facilities accept MaineCare only after a period of private-pay residency, or have limited MaineCare beds. Ask specifically about MaineCare acceptance — and current availability — when contacting any facility listed here.

Eligibility for MaineCare-funded residential care requires a financial and functional assessment through Maine's Assessing Services Agency (ASA). Begin this process early — assessments and placements take time, and waitlists are common at MaineCare-accepting facilities.

Assessment is required before MaineCare-funded residential care can begin.
